Missouri Genealogy Research Guide

Quick Facts

Missouri entered the Union on August 10, 1821, as the twenty-fourth state, formed from the Missouri Territory as part of the Missouri Compromise. Because the state was carved out of the federal public domain, its land research runs through federal channels — a crucial difference from the older seaboard states — while births, marriages, and deaths are largely a matter of county and city custody. Those two facts shape nearly every Missouri record search.

  • Capital: Jefferson City, the permanent seat of government since 1826. The territorial capital was St. Louis, and St. Charles served as the temporary state capital from 1821 until the move to Jefferson City.
  • Statehood: August 10, 1821, the twenty-fourth state, formed from Missouri Territory (organized in 1812) after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 admitted Missouri as a slave state, balanced by the admission of Maine.
  • Land type: Missouri is a federal-land (public-domain) state. Unclaimed land was surveyed on the township-and-range system tied to the Fifth Principal Meridian, established in 1815, and then granted or sold through federal land offices. The first transfer out of government hands was a land patent; later transfers between individuals are deeds recorded by the county recorder. Missouri research therefore uses federal General Land Office records as well as county deed books — and, distinctively, the U.S. confirmations of earlier French and Spanish colonial grants.
  • Counties: 114 counties, plus the independent City of St. Louis, which belongs to no county. The five original counties — Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, St. Charles, St. Louis, and Ste. Genevieve — were organized on October 1, 1812. Six more grew out of the 1836 Platte Purchase in the northwest corner, and the City of St. Louis separated from St. Louis County in 1876.
  • Nickname and motto: the Show-Me State; the state motto is Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto (“Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law”).
  • Where records live: most vital, land, probate, court, and tax records are kept at the county level by the recorder of deeds and the circuit clerk, and the independent City of St. Louis keeps its own records separately from St. Louis County. Statewide indexes and many digitized images are gathered by the Missouri State Archives through Missouri Digital Heritage.

Libraries and Archives

Missouri research rests on a strong state archives, a statewide historical society with regional research centers, and unusually deep public-library genealogy collections around St. Louis and Kansas City; county recorders, circuit clerks, and local societies hold material for their own areas. The leading repositories include:

  • Missouri State Archives (Jefferson City) — a division of the Secretary of State and the state’s central archive, holding microfilmed county records for all 114 counties, state and territorial censuses, military service abstracts, land and court records, and the statewide death-certificate collection.
  • Missouri State Library (Jefferson City) — county histories, plat books, and the state document collections.
  • State Historical Society of Missouri — thousands of manuscript collections, the largest Missouri newspaper collection, maps, photographs, and oral histories, with research centers in Columbia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Rolla, and Cape Girardeau.
  • Missouri Historical Society, Library & Research Center (St. Louis) — a leading collection for colonial French and Spanish records, the St. Louis freedom suits and freedom licenses, and early St. Louis history.
  • St. Louis County Library, History & Genealogy Center — home to the collections of the St. Louis Genealogical Society, the St. Louis Archdiocesan parish-record microfilm, and city and county naturalization and land indexes.
  • St. Louis Public Library — federal census microfilm, city directories, and extensive Civil War resources including compiled service records.
  • Midwest Genealogy Center (Independence) — one of the largest free-standing public genealogy libraries in the country, operated by the Mid-Continent Public Library, with federal census microfilm, county and family histories, and subscription-database access.
  • Kansas City Public Library — the Missouri Valley Special Collections, documenting Kansas City and western Missouri.
  • National Archives at Kansas City — federal court, naturalization, land-entry, and census records for Missouri and the central plains.
  • National Archives at St. Louis and the National Personnel Records Center — the central repository for twentieth-century military and civilian personnel files; a 1973 fire destroyed a large portion of the Army and Air Force personnel records held there, so alternate sources are often needed.
  • The FamilySearch Library and its worldwide FamilySearch Centers hold microfilm and digitized copies of most surviving Missouri civil, church, and court records, while county recorders and circuit clerks hold the originals for their own areas.

Law and Government

Missouri’s statutes and legislative journals explain when and why records were created — from the 1807 territorial act that let enslaved people sue for their freedom to the vital-registration laws of 1883 and 1909. Many of the foundational volumes are digitized and free to read.

  • Missouri Digital Heritage — the Secretary of State’s portal, where the annual session laws (the Laws of the State of Missouri), the periodic Revised Statutes, and county-level legal records can be searched.
  • Laws of the State of Missouri (1825) — the two-volume first revision of the state’s statutes, printed at St. Louis and free to read on HathiTrust.
  • The session laws of the Territory of Missouri (1812–1820) and the earliest printed state statutes are digitized on HathiTrust and the Internet Archive.
  • The Missouri State Archives holds the legislative records of the General Assembly, and the House and Senate Journals from the first sessions onward are digitized and free to read.

Vital Records (Birth, Marriage, Death)

Missouri did not require statewide registration of births and deaths until 1910, so before that these events appear mainly in county, city, and church records. Marriages, by contrast, were recorded by the counties from their earliest days. The independent City of St. Louis kept its own registers well before the state system began, and those are searched separately.

Statewide (outside the City of St. Louis). Birth and death certificates from 1910 onward are held by the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records, where a fee and proof of eligibility apply for recent records; death certificates pass to the Missouri State Archives once they are more than fifty years old. Earlier efforts fell short: a voluntary registration law of 1863 and a county-level requirement from 1883 to 1893 produced scattered and incomplete records. County clerks recorded marriages from the beginning, and statewide marriage registration began in 1881. Use these online indexes:

City of St. Louis. The independent city kept a Register of Deaths from February 1850 and a Register of Births from about 1850, both running until statewide registration in 1910, though neither is complete. The Missouri State Archives microfilmed these registers, and copies are available through the St. Louis County Library and on FamilySearch; the pre-1910 city events are also abstracted in the Missouri Birth and Death Records Database. Kansas City and some other cities likewise kept their own earlier death and burial registers.

More recent records — births from 1910 and deaths still within the access limit — are obtained from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and current City of St. Louis certificates from the city’s Recorder of Deeds, where a fee and proof of eligibility apply.

History and Timeline of Major Events

These dates shaped Missouri’s jurisdictions and the records that survive:

  • 1735 — French colonists establish Ste. Genevieve, the first permanent European settlement in Missouri (some accounts place the founding a little later).
  • 1764 — Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau found St. Louis in February.
  • 1780 — British and allied forces attack St. Louis during the American Revolution.
  • 1803 — The Louisiana Purchase transfers the region to the United States.
  • 1805 — The first federal board of land commissioners is created to review French and Spanish land claims.
  • 1811–1812 — A series of great earthquakes strikes the New Madrid area, later prompting federal relief land certificates.
  • 1812 — Missouri Territory is organized, and the five original counties are formed on October 1.
  • 1815 — The Fifth Principal Meridian is established, framing Missouri’s township-and-range land survey.
  • 1818–1819 — The first federal land offices open at St. Louis and Franklin.
  • 1820 — The Missouri Compromise opens the way to statehood, and the first state constitution is adopted.
  • 1821 — Missouri is admitted as the twenty-fourth state on August 10, with St. Charles as the temporary capital.
  • 1826 — Jefferson City becomes the permanent seat of government.
  • 1836 — The Platte Purchase adds six counties in the northwest corner.
  • 1846–1857 — The Dred Scott freedom suit begins in the St. Louis courts and ends before the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 1861 — The Civil War divides Missouri; the battles of Wilson’s Creek and Lexington are fought.
  • 1864 — Sterling Price’s Confederate raid sweeps across the state, and several courthouses are burned during the war.
  • 1865 — A new state constitution abolishes slavery in Missouri.
  • 1876 — The City of St. Louis separates from St. Louis County to become an independent city.
  • 1911 — A fire destroys the Missouri Capitol at Jefferson City, with the loss of many state records, including most early state-census schedules.

Census Records and Substitutes

Federal censuses were taken every ten years, and Missouri appears from 1830 through 1950; the 1810 and 1820 schedules for the area are lost, as is most of the 1890 census nationwide. They are free on FamilySearch and searchable on Ancestry ($) and MyHeritage ($).

State and territorial censuses fall between the federal years and can place a family every few years, but the 1911 Capitol fire destroyed most of the state’s own copies, so surviving schedules are usually those kept locally by the county clerk. Both the free Missouri census and tax-list database at the Missouri State Archives and Missouri State and Territorial Census Records, 1732–1933 on FamilySearch help locate them. What survives varies sharply by year:

  • Colonial and Spanish enumerations (to 1804): scattered lists of households survive for the villages under French and Spanish rule, such as the New Madrid lists of 1797, many of them printed in Louis Houck’s documentary history of the Spanish regime.
  • Territorial censuses (1814, 1817, 1819): mostly survive only as statistical summaries, though some head-of-household lists, including St. Charles for 1817 and 1819, survive as transcriptions.
  • 1821 and 1824: state censuses taken around statehood, surviving chiefly as abstracts.
  • 1840: a state count matching the federal year; individual schedules survive for only about nine counties, among them New Madrid, Newton, Pike, Randolph, Ray, Shelby, Stoddard, and Warren.
  • 1844, 1852, 1856, and 1868: further state censuses, of which only a handful of county listings remain; the rest are statistical abstracts.
  • 1876: the most useful surviving state census, with schedules for roughly a fifth of the counties, including Benton, Cape Girardeau, Christian, Franklin, Greene, Howard, Osage, Phelps, and St. Francois.
  • 1880 supplemental schedules: the Missouri State Archives holds the federal “defective, dependent, and delinquent classes” schedules for that year.

Where censuses are missing, city directories — St. Louis directories begin in 1821 — and tax lists are the best substitutes for placing a family in a given year.

Church Records

Because civil registration came late, church records are the most important substitute for vital records before 1910. Catholic registers reach back to the French and Spanish colonial era; the earliest congregations were Roman Catholic, followed after 1830 by a rapid growth of German Lutheran and Evangelical, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Disciples of Christ churches. Catholic sacramental registers and the German Protestant registers of St. Louis and the Missouri Rhineland are especially valuable as vital-record substitutes.

  • The St. Louis Archdiocesan parish records, which begin in 1765, are the largest single body of early Missouri church records; the microfilmed set is available at the St. Louis County Library and through the FamilySearch Library, with early entries in French, Latin, or German.
  • Missouri Births and Christenings, 1827–1935 — free on FamilySearch; an every-name index drawn largely from congregational registers.
  • The St. Louis Genealogical Society documents St. Louis-area congregations and the survival of their records, a useful key before ordering from a parish or denominational archive.

Catholic sacramental registers not yet microfilmed remain with the parish or with the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the Diocese of Kansas City–St. Joseph, and Protestant registers are often held by the congregation, a denominational archive, or a regional historical society.

Court Records

Missouri’s courts produced some of the richest genealogical records in the state — not only lawsuits but estates, guardianships, naturalizations, freedom suits, and name changes. Knowing which court held jurisdiction, and when, is the key to finding a file.

  • Circuit courts, from the territorial period onward — the trial courts of general jurisdiction, hearing civil, criminal, and (in many counties) probate matters; the county circuit clerk holds the case files and was often the recorder of naturalizations.
  • Probate and county courts — handled estates, guardianships, and county administration, with the probate function shifting among the county, common pleas, and circuit courts over time.
  • Colonial and territorial tribunals — Spanish lieutenant governors and local commandants settled disputes before 1804, and American courts began with the territory in 1804–1812.
  • The independent City of St. Louis — since 1876 the city has run its own circuit court and kept its records apart from St. Louis County.

The Missouri State Archives has indexed and digitized many early case files through its judicial records project, including the St. Louis circuit-court files — among them the freedom suits of 1814 to 1860 — and modern case information is available through the state courts system.

Ethnic and Minority Records

Missouri’s population brought together French and Spanish colonists, a very large German immigrant community, Irish arrivals, enslaved and free African Americans, and Native nations displaced before statehood. Knowing where a group settled points to the records most likely to document a family.

  • French and Spanish colonial. The founding population settled Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, St. Charles, and the Mississippi River villages; they are documented in Catholic registers, colonial land-grant confirmations, and the manuscripts of the Missouri Historical Society.
  • German. Germans settled heavily in St. Louis and the Missouri Rhineland — Hermann, Washington, and the Missouri River valley toward Jefferson City. Dutzow, founded in 1832, is often called the first German settlement in the state; German-language church registers and newspapers and the resources of the St. Louis Genealogical Society are the key sources.
  • Irish. The Irish clustered in St. Louis and Kansas City, largely within Catholic parishes distinct from the German ones, so parish and cemetery records are central.
  • African American. Missouri was a slave state until 1865. Freedom suits, freedom licenses, emancipation records, slave schedules, and the Freedmen’s Bureau field records (free on FamilySearch) document enslaved and free people; the St. Louis freedom suits are searchable through the Missouri State Archives judicial records database.
  • Native American. The Osage, Missouria, Otoe, Ioway, Sac and Fox, Shawnee, and Delaware nations lived in or passed through Missouri and were largely removed by the 1830s. Their records are chiefly federal — treaties, annuity rolls, and Bureau of Indian Affairs files — and the State Historical Society of Missouri surveys the relevant manuscript sources.

Immigration and Naturalization

St. Louis was the great inland river port and a gateway to the West. Most immigrants bound for Missouri — above all Germans and Irish — first landed at an Atlantic or Gulf port, especially New Orleans, and came up the Mississippi by steamboat, so their arrival is usually recorded in coastal passenger lists rather than at a Missouri port.

  • Because most Missouri immigrants entered through coastal ports, the federal passenger-arrival lists — New Orleans above all — are the place to begin; they are free on FamilySearch and searchable on Ancestry ($).
  • The St. Louis Genealogical Society hosts St. Charles County German-immigrant lists and Port of St. Louis records that help trace those who arrived by river.

Naturalization. Before September 1906 any court of record — federal, state, county, or circuit — could naturalize, so the records are scattered; the process was federalized in 1906. The St. Louis Genealogical Society hosts a searchable index to St. Louis city and county naturalizations, county naturalizations appear in Missouri County Marriage, Naturalization, and Court Records, 1800–1991 (free on FamilySearch), and the original federal petitions are held by the National Archives at Kansas City.

Land Records

Land research is where Missouri’s status as a federal, public-domain state matters most. Title came in three layers: French and Spanish colonial concessions later confirmed by the United States, first-title patents issued by the federal government out of the public domain, and the ordinary deeds by which land then passed between individuals. All public land is described by township, range, and section measured from the Fifth Principal Meridian, established in 1815.

The French and Spanish colonial claims. After the Louisiana Purchase the United States had to sort out land granted under French and Spanish rule. The Recorder of Land Titles and successive boards of land commissioners reviewed these claims, and a large share were rejected; the surviving concessions, arpent surveys, depositions, and plats are among the most distinctive Missouri land records.

  • The Missouri State Archives holds the confirmed and rejected colonial land claims, the Recorder of Land Titles files, and the related surveys, many of them digitized through Missouri Digital Heritage.
  • The American State Papers, Public Lands series — a printed, every-name key to the confirmed and rejected claims — is digitized and free on the Internet Archive and HathiTrust.
  • Federal relief for the victims of the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes created a distinctive set of land certificates traceable through the land-commission records.

The federal public domain and county deeds. Land the government sold or granted outright is documented by federal patents; the first land offices opened at St. Louis in 1818 and Franklin in 1819, followed by offices at Jackson, Lexington, Palmyra, Springfield, and elsewhere. Once land left federal hands, transfers were recorded by the county recorder of deeds, and the independent City of St. Louis keeps its own deed series.

  • BLM General Land Office Records — free; images of the original federal land patents issued for Missouri from 1820 onward, searchable by name and by legal description.
  • The 1836 Platte Purchase opened the six northwestern counties — Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Holt, Nodaway, and Platte — which were surveyed and patented afterward.
  • County deeds and mortgages are recorded by the county recorder of deeds, and many older deed books are digitized on FamilySearch by county.
  • FamilySearch Full-Text Search — free; makes many unindexed Missouri deeds, patents, and land papers searchable by every name they contain, including grantors, grantees, and witnesses.

Military Records

Missourians served in every American conflict from the territorial militia onward, and the Civil War split the state deeply between Union and Confederate service. The Missouri State Archives holds the best single statewide index, and the National Archives holds the compiled service and pension records.

  • Statewide index: the free Missouri Soldiers’ Records: War of 1812 through World War I database indexes the service-card abstracts compiled by the state Adjutant General, with linked images.
  • Territorial militia and War of 1812: muster and enlistment rolls are held at the Missouri State Archives and on FamilySearch microfilm.
  • Indian wars and the Mexican War: service records for the conflicts of the 1830s and the Mexican War of 1846–1848 are indexed at the Missouri State Archives.
  • Civil War (Union): the Enrolled and Provisional Missouri Militia and the Missouri Volunteers served the Union; compiled Union service records are on FamilySearch, Fold3, and Ancestry, and the state’s soldiers’ records database covers them.
  • Civil War (Confederate): the Missouri State Guard under Sterling Price was the state’s pro-Southern force; Confederate service records are on FamilySearch and Fold3, and Confederate pension and soldiers’-home applications are held at the Missouri State Archives.
  • Union Provost Marshal papers: a State Archives index covers the loyalty oaths, passes, and civilian case papers of 1861–1866, unusually rich for a divided state.
  • Later service: Spanish-American War, World War I, and later abstracts are held at the State Archives, and the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis holds twentieth-century personnel files, many reduced by the 1973 fire.

Probate Records

Probate files — wills, administrations of intestate estates, and guardianships of minors — are among the richest sources for family relationships, and in a former slave state they can also name enslaved people in inventories. No statewide probate index exists, so the records are approached county by county.

  • Record types: wills, letters of administration, bonds, inventories, appraisements, sale bills, settlements, and guardianship or curatorship files — the estate file usually names the heirs.
  • Custody over time: probate has usually been recorded by the clerk of the probate court, though in some counties the county, common pleas, or circuit court handled it; today the probate division of each county’s circuit court holds these cases, and the independent City of St. Louis keeps its own.

Online, Missouri Probate Records, 1750–1998 is free on FamilySearch and browsable by county, with most content falling between 1840 and 1930, and Missouri Wills and Probate Records, 1766–1988 ($) on Ancestry is name-searchable across most counties. FamilySearch Full-Text Search also makes many unindexed wills and estate files searchable by every name they contain.

Tax Records

Tax lists place a family in a specific town and year and are valuable where censuses or deeds are missing; several consecutive years can reveal when a young man came of age, acquired property, or died and left heirs. Missouri’s tax records span the colonial, territorial, county, and federal levels.

  • Territorial and early state tax lists: some reaching back into the Spanish period, are indexed in the free Missouri census and tax-list database at the Missouri State Archives.
  • County personal-property and land tax: county assessors’ books survive unevenly; many are digitized on FamilySearch by county and record real estate, personal property, and, before 1865, enslaved people held.
  • Federal IRS assessment lists: the Civil War–era internal-revenue assessments are free on FamilySearch for Missouri and indexed as U.S. IRS Tax Assessment Lists, 1862–1918 ($) on Ancestry.
  • The Missouri State Archives holds colonial and territorial tax lists and later assessment rolls, while county collectors and clerks hold the more recent ones.
